How Henry Taylor Transformed the Way We Look at Ourselves

HENRY TAYLOR How the figurative painter made portraiture the dominant mode of art in our era — and changed the way America sees itself. It was Henry Taylor doing Henry Taylor, like a pop star in his Vegas residency phase. A few seasons earlier, for Miu Miu’s spring 2022 collection, Prada delivered raw-edge chino micro-miniskirts belted below the hip bone. The 45 King, the influential New York City hip-hop producer who worked with Queen Latifah, Eminem and Jay-Z, died on Thursday. Born Mark Howard James, he took the moniker The 45 King because of his fondness for sampling old, obscure records. His death was announced on social media Thursday afternoon by a fellow hip-hop producer, DJ Premier. Information on the cause or place of death were not immediately available. “His sound was unlike any other from his heavy drums and his horns were so distinct on every production,” DJ Premier wrote, referring to James as DJ Mark The 45 King.

The fashion show that changed hip-hop forever

CNN —Chanel’s 1991 Fall-Winter ready-to-wear show was set in Paris, but its soul was right off the streets of New York City. “He listens to everything, reads everything, sees everything, and then distills it into these potent fashion images.”Linda Evangelista and Karl Lagerfeld (center) walk the runway during the finale of Chanel's 1991 Fall-Winter fashion show in Paris, France. Victor Virgile/Gamma-Rapho/Getty ImagesWhat would become known colloquially as Chanel’s “hip-hop collection” was a watershed moment, the pinnacle of French prêt-à-porter (ready-to-wear) welcoming hip-hop into its sanctum. It’s unclear whether Mizrahi and the like appreciated hip-hop or saw it as a grab for cache and cash. Editor’s Note: This piece is excerpted from Sowmya Krishnamurthy’s “FASHION KILLA: How Hip-Hop Revolutionized High Fashion,” published by Gallery Books, a subsidiary of Simon & Schuster.

Something to sip on…Kim Fields in a scene from "Living Single." Rather than rehash the fact that “Living Single” was “Friends” before “Friends” ever existed, lets applaud it for the glow-up and grow-up it showcased in Kim Fields. That’s why I have no problems jamming along to the new series “Dance with Qai Qai,” now running on YouTube. “It has been amazing to see how Qai Qai has captured the hearts of so many young fans so we’re thrilled to introduce them to ‘Dance with Qai Qai!,’” Williams said in a statement. We can’t wait for other families to get to watch—and dance—together!”It’s been wild watching Qai Qai go from one child’s beloved doll to a full-fledged star.

On stage and in magazine spreads, rappers have waged a Cold War about who could dress the flyest, wear the most outré thing, push the envelope the furthest. And they backed it up on their songs, bragging endlessly about outdressing everyone and weaving designer name after designer name into their rhymes. P&G Studios head Kimberly Doebereiner argues that great entertainment can come from brands. Procter & Gamble is at the forefront of the growing brand film space — with its own in-house shingle, P&G Studios, actively pursuing entertainment projects that look nothing like ads. "The first thing I'd love is for the distributors to see that great content can come from anybody, and even if it's from a brand, that doesn't mean it's brand content," she told Insider in an interview. "We have great marketing, we have great brands, we can help bring in viewers, right? "We'd love to have our content be able to show up in the retailer with our brands and create better awareness for that content," Doebereiner said.

Beyoncé Knowles is teaming up with Kelly Rowland and Houston officials to support a housing project. It was unclear if Knowles and Rowland are investing in the project. However, Knowles and Rowland are among the few that have taken their real estate interests beyond the glitz and glamor of purchasing luxurious homes. With more buyers moving into the area, home prices and rents have surged as residents compete for housing. Given that statistic, he said he's "grateful" for the Knowles and Rowland project.

“Everything is a flashback,” Syreeta Gates said last week. “That’s the way it always is with our culture. It was a dizzying convergence, musically and visually. Decades afterward, the rap scholar Tricia Rose would note in “Black Noise: Rap Music and Black Culture in Contemporary America” how skeptical the mainstream initially was to music most thought was a fad. That is, until the indie producer Sylvia Robinson released the hit song “Rapper’s Delight” in 1979.
Stacy Spikes told Insider he plans to put MoviePass out of beta and make it available for all by the summer. You would think Spikes would want to run as far away as possible from the movie-ticket-subscription startup. Before Stacy Spikes created MoviePass he created the Urbanworld Film Festival. I wanted to put that down because I see so many times people approach me and think MoviePass was my first business. Kelly KahlThe CBS Broadcast Center in Manhattan. Thomson ReutersAfter 26 years at the network, including over five years at the top, Kelly Kahl is leaving his post at CBS amid a broader restructuring and streamlining at Paramount Global. Kahl also presided over the network when it introduced its trio of "FBI" dramas, hit comedy "Ghosts," and Queen Latifah starrer "The Equalizer," Cheeks noted. In his stead is Amy Reisenbach, who is stepping into the role of CBS Entertainment president to oversee the network's primetime, daytime, and late night creative departments, according to the company. A CBS veteran who has been there since 2005, she has occupied programming roles at both the network and the studio.
That's how much the bidder paid this weekend for a factory-sealed model of the first-edition iPhone — their winning bid topped out at $39,339.60. The 8GB smartphone was sold by LCG Auctions on Sunday. Steve Jobs first unveiled the original iPhone in 2007, and Apple quickly sold millions of units. In addition to the 8GB of storage the phone also featured a 2-megapixel camera. For context, the base model of the recently-released iPhone 14 has 128GB of storage and sports a 12-megapixel main camera with an ultra wide lens.
For Queen Latifah, who has released three films in 2022 and stars in "The Equalizer" on network television, having a wide and varied career was always the plan. Ever since her big break as a rapper in the later 1980s, Latifah says that her mom has advised her to "never to put all my eggs in one basket." Latifah, who is currently promoting her new partnership with Lenovo's Evolve Small Initiative, did just that. She quickly branched out from rap to singing, sitcoms, films and even hosted her own talk show at one point. When she had an interest in pursuing something, she says that she always felt like it was worth trying.
